Record-Breaking Heat to Scorch 22 U.S. States This Week
US · Published May 12, 2026
A significant heatwave is set to impact 22 states across the U.S.
this week, with temperatures expected to exceed 90°F (32°C) for approximately 50 million people and 100°F (38°C) for 11 million more.
The most intense heat will be concentrated in the Intermountain West, Plains, and South.

Why It's Important?

The heatwave poses significant risks, particularly in areas already grappling with severe drought. States like Colorado and Utah, where over 90% of the land is drought-affected, may face heightened water scarcity. Outdoor workers and vulnerable populations are at increased risk of heat-related illnesses. In Florida, dry conditions have fueled a 4,800-acre wildfire in the Everglades. The National Weather Service has advised residents to stay hydrated and seek shade during peak heat hours. Agricultural impacts are also likely, with limited rainfall forecast for drought-stricken regions.
